Ownership

Quality Thin Films was founded in 1991 by Karl George, Sr along with his son, Karl George, Jr, who now runs the day to day operations.  Corporate headquarters is in a new building located on the West Coast of Florida.

Clients of QTF have access to the unique knowledge that Karl George, Sr. has developed over the last 44 years.  Mr. George actively Karl George, Srruns our Research department and was one of the earliest practitioners of optical coating. He started with Perkin Elmer Corporation in 1962 and, after graduating from their extensive optical training program, he moved into the optical coating department.

He gained his first experience in the optics fabrication part of the business. At that time, Perkin Elmer and the industry as a whole were limited in the fabrication of thin films. Most of the information available was published theoretical data with limited practical application recorded. Perkin Elmer was one of the leaders in the industry because of research and development capabilities.

Mr. George benefited by working in research, doing material studies including stress analysis, thin film constants and design theory. One of his outstanding talents was taking the theoretical designs from the physicists and turning them into reality.

He was also involved in the development of new products including laser coatings, broad band anti-reflection coatings, band pass filters and combinations of metal and dielectric coatings.  As a senior technician at Perkin Elmer, Mr. George lead the team that coated the Hubble Telescope.  The optic was eight feet in diameter and took five years to manufacture and coat.  The coating was within 3 points of perfection which added 10% more light and increased the telescope's reach by a billion light years.

After one too many winters watching golf on television, Mr. George relocated Karl George, Srhis family to the West Coast of Florida.

When Mr. George decided to start his own firm, Quality Thin Films, Inc., he intended to run a specialized operation catering to the most difficult challenges and handling his clients in his personal, engaging manner.

Success breeds success and before long QTF had grown from a “garage shop” to the full service, ISO certified operation it is today, complete with several Six Sigma graduates.

Mr. George personally oversees the design phase of new products and all coating designs ensuring that QTF standards are met from the beginning.  He invented the QTF proprietary Enhanced ION Assisted Deposition process.

QTF still delivers its products with the personal style and warmth of Mr. George.
